I wanted to capture this final dash to the water in a way that would portrey their urgency and depiration to quench their thirst, after sitting at a waterhole for sometime and seeing multiple herds arrive from all directions, i finally managed this image of a herd passing right by me. The grass heads were wet with dew setting a scene of white topped grass with the mist rolling in and out in waves of whispy white with patches of soft defused light popping through. This was the scene we were photographing on a open plain when a black backed jackal poped out of the grass making for a wondeful subject in this scene of wonderland. Day 042 - River Horse The permanent plentiful waters and ubundant grazing along the Chobe River is a perfect habitat for the hundreds of hippo that reside in the area. However with such a large population, confict is a certaintly. This large hippo bull was demostrating his power and size by porpoising in and out of the river to intimidate a rival who had been sizing him up. During the begining of the year when the wildebeest migration is in the area, which happens to coincide with not only the wildebeest calving season but also the beginning off the rainy season is an amazing time to be there and photograph these beautuful cats. Our goal on this trip was not only to capture great action images of the cheetah hunting but also intimate moments between the cats. These antelope who habitat often consists of large watered and even swamp areas is no stranger to water, and even though often cross through the rivers channels from one island to another, this is not often witnessed and was ceetainly my fist time seeing it. We spotted this large male leaping into the water from a nearby island and litle distance down river. As we approched quietly so as not to startle the animal he had already reached the part of the river where he could gain some footing below and started to leap through the water. Witht he Bank sill 40 yards or so away we were ceetain that this splashing would attract some crocodiles nearby which would be a major threat to the lechwe. However he made it to the safty of the bank, alittle exhausted but unharmed. Day 006 - Chasing Tails I spent 10 days following this large pack of wild dogs consisting 7 adults and 13, 6 month old pups.The African Wild Dog also know as the African Painted Dog, is one of Africas most persecuted predators. It is estimated that there are less than 40 subpopulations contaning less than 2000 adult animals across the African Continent. This population is still declining due to human persecution, habitat infringment and desease, thus the African Wild dog is listed as endangered. Early one morning after setting out in seach of the dogs we spen some time following their tracks from where we had left them the day before, it wasnt too long before we found them, wild dogs dont tend to move too much during the night. It was a cool overcast morning and the young pups were palying all around chasing eachother up and down trying to grab hold of eachothers tails. I set my camera up on a ground pod with a remote trigger and leopard crawled up to the eara they were playing and then returned to some nearby bushes, from where i could remotely trigger my camera when the pups got with in resonable framing distance. The Local people call it "Mosi-oa-Tunya" -- the smoke that thunders. the smoke that thunders. The Victoria falls is 1 708 meters wide, making it the largest curtain of water in the world. With the harsh conditions wind blowing, clouds racing over above us and the odd lightening bolt lighting up the sky the scene was set. This image was just one of the serveral hundred captured during the night as the storm passed over Dead Vlei. What amazed me about this image was the fact that it is completely lit by a bolt of lightening that struck during the exposure. Dispite the drama of the scene, I really love that fact that it is something very unique, considering this area of the namib desert only receives an average annual rain fall of less than 80mm, so to be there during one of these storms is just so amazing. B&W 012 - Gazing King Panthera leo - Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park South Africa - This large male lion and his pride we resting under an acacia tree after filling their bellies on a Gemsbok that they managed to kill during the night. This particular female had stunning eyes that stared thraight through you and i wanted to show and emphasize that look, so i chose a slightly different composition to exclude the obtrusive vegetation to her right but still showing the intensity of her stare. Elephants often cross the river from Botswana to Namibia in the late evening, to feed under the cover and safety of darkness, before corssing back to Botswana in the early morning. The light had gotten too dark to shoot anything other than silhouettes with the colours of Dusk in the back ground, so with the use of a Speedlight i managed this picture. The leopardess had already killed the impala and dragged it to the base of this large Jackalbery tree where she had now paused to catch her breath. However she had to be quick it is likely that a hyaena or two had been alerted by the impalas alarm calls and were not to far away. After a few minutes she hoisted the kill up into the safty of the branches of the large tree and finally started to feed, every now and then still keeping a look out potential threats to her kil. By this time the sun was rising and produced some great colours in the sky which poped through the thick foliage of the tree which just added the finishing touch to this image. During the peak of summer in the savute area there is very little water and one of the few places there was, was right infront of our camp. During the night elephants would stream in one herd after another to drink and the water hole. So whislt sitting in a hide i was very fortunate to have these Nyala come drink, the mirrored reflections in the water made for a great image. She had the remains of an impala kill in a large marula tree where we spent some time watching her feed. Upon closer investgation and as we seached witht he spotlight we came a cross this female leopard with a freshly caught impala ewe, she immediatelly and with emence power draged the impala to a near by tree and then hoisted the impala, which easily equals her own body weight, into the tree and to safety away from scavengers such as hyaenas. I wanted to capture this final dash to the water in a way that would portrey their urgency and depiration to quench their thirst. Location: Sabi Sand Game Reserve, South Africa, Africa. Equipment: Nikon D3s Nikkor, 200-400mm f/4.0 VR II, bean bag and panning plate. 1/10 sec at f/4,5 ISO 200.
